Jyotish, meaning 'the science of light,' is the traditional Hindu system of astrology that has been practiced for over 5,000 years. Unlike Western astrology, which uses the tropical zodiac based on the seasons, Vedic astrology employs the sidereal zodiac, which aligns with the actual positions of stars.

This difference—currently about 24 degrees—means your Vedic Sun sign may differ from your Western sign. Rather than contradiction, this represents different lenses for viewing the same cosmic truth.

Vedic astrology is deeply intertwined with the concepts of karma (action and consequence) and dharma (life purpose). The birth chart (Kundali) is seen as a map of one's karma from past lives, revealing both challenges to overcome and gifts to develop.

The system uses a unique division called Nakshatras—27 lunar mansions that add nuance beyond the 12 signs. Each Nakshatra has its own deity, symbol, and qualities, providing remarkably specific insights.

Remedial measures (Upayas) distinguish Vedic astrology from Western approaches. Gemstones, mantras, rituals, and charitable acts are prescribed to strengthen beneficial planets and mitigate challenging ones, offering practitioners tools for conscious evolution.
